Location
Whangārei is the ‘gathering place of the whales’ and is New Zealand’s northernmost city. Known as the gateway to the ‘winterless north’ and the Bay of Islands, the region’s subtropical natural beauty is hard to beat. There is much to do in and around the city, whether it be exploring the nearby beaches and walks, or simply experiencing the local shops and restaurants.

This unique city oozes creativity from the architecture in the Town Basin to the galleries, museums, restaurants, and shops. It also has plenty to offer in the way of natural beauty with stunning waterfalls and nature walks, and is often described as 'the city with 100 beaches'.
In keeping with the 'creativity of nature meets human creativity' theme, the Hundertwasser Art Centre is a must-see. Located on the waterfront in Whangārei City, this centre celebrates art and artists while "restoring territories to nature with spontaneous vegetation, tree tenants and an afforested roof". "The Whangarei Quarry Gardens is a community garden project created by volunteers in the forested western hills of Whangarei City". Open 9am - 5pm, 7 days a week (with some current adjustment due to severe damage from the recent cyclone), the gardens offer hikes, guided walking tours, and golf cart tours to view this amazing landscape.
Kiwi North: Whangarei Museum, Kiwi House & Heritage Park is set on 25 hectares of rolling farmland, forest & bush, with views that overlook the city & the Whangarei Heads the site features a museum, a nocturnal kiwi house and gift store, and unique Victorian heritage buildings.
