The River Managers’ Special Interest Group is a sub group of the Te Uru Kahika Regional and Unitary Councils. The River Managers provide flood risk river management for the 16 regional and unitary councils that provide services to communities across New Zealand. River management and flood protection schemes exist for 100 New Zealand towns and cities, and for 5% of New Zealand’s land area with most of this being highly productive land. Flood protection infrastructure includes stopbanks, floodways and flood pumps. River managers includes river engineers and a range of people involved in flood protection technical, environmental, science research, planning and community based activities with tangata whenua and others. Floods are the most common and significant natural hazard that New Zealand faces, especially with the impact of climate change events. Water New Zealand promotes the sustainable management and development of the water environment.
